Basic Electricity

Definitions for basic electricity terms

TermDefinition
CHARGE the property that causes objects to electrically attract or repel other objects. There are two types of charge, positive and negative. An object which has no charge is neutral.
ELECTRICITY the presence and movement of electrical charges.
ATOM the smallest complete particle of matter. All objects are made of atoms. According to the Bohr model, an atom consists of smaller subparticles called protons, neutrons and electrons.
PROTON the positively charged type of particle at the center of an atom. The number of protons determines the type of element – iron, copper, oxygen etc.
NEUTRON the non-charged or “neutral” type of particle at the center of an atom. Neutrons add mass but usually are not involved in electricity. Neutrons and protons together make up the nucleus of an atom.
ELECTRON the negatively charged particle that revolves around the nucleus. It is electrons that move from place to place to create what we call electricity
CONDUCTOR an element or compound in which some electrons can move freely from one atom or molecule to another.
INSULATOR an element or compound in which all electrons are bound to specific atoms or molecules, and cannot normally move from one to another.
STATIC ELECTRICITY electricity characterized by stationary charges on objects.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
