Directions, Positions and Movement

TermDefinition
Buccal tooth surface towards the cheek
Occlusal the chewing or biting surface of the teeth
Lingual pertaining to the tongue ( tooth surface towards the tongue)
Mesial tooth surface closest to the midline
Abduction movement of a limb part away from the median line
Adduction movement of a limb part toward the median line
Adjacent next to, adjoining , or close
Caudal the tail end of the body
Central situated near the more proximal area of the body
Cranial the cranium or head end of the body
Deep situated away from the surface of the body opposite of superficial
Distal farther from the center of the body
Dorsal the back area of a quadruped ( animal with four legs)
Extension the act of straightening such as a joint
Flexion the act of bending such as a joint
Lateral position farther "outside" from the median plane of the body
Medial position closer "inside" to the median plane of the body
Oblique pertaining to an angle
Palmar pertains to the caudal surface of the front foot distal to the antebrachiocarpal joint; undersurface of the front foot
Peripheral situated near the periphery the outermost part surface of an organ or body part.
Plantar pertains to the caudal surface of the back foot distal to the tarsocrural joint; undersurface of the rear foot.
Pronation lying face down
Proximal nearer to the center of the body
Rostral the nose end of the body
Recumbent lying down
Superficial situated near the surface of the body
Supination lying face up
Ventral pertaining to the underside of a quadruped.
Tarus ankle
Carpus wrist
Transverse line that divides the body into cranial and caudal or referred to as a horizontal plane.
