Transgender Health Module 2 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
AGENDER An umbrella term encompassing many different genders of people who commonly do not have a gender and/or have a gender that they describe as neutral. Many agender people are trans.
ALLY Someone who advocates and supports a community other than their own. Allies are not part of the communities they help. A person should not self-identify as an ally without showing that they are one through action.
BIGENDER A person who experiences gender identity as two genders at the same time, or whose gender identity may vary between two genders.
BISEXUALITY An umbrella term for people who experience sexual and/or emotional attraction to more than one gender (pansexual, fluid, omnisexual, queer, etc).
CIS(GENDER) Adjective that means “identifies as their sex assigned at birth” derived from the Latin word meaning “on the same side.” A cisgender/cis person is not transgender. “Cisgender” does not indicate biology, gender expression, or sexuality/sexual orientation.
COMING OUT 1) The process by which one accepts and/or comes to identify one’s own sexuality or gender identity (to “come out” to oneself). 2) Also the process by which one shares one’s sexuality or gender identity with others (to “come out” to friends, etc.).
DRAG Exaggerated, theatrical, and/or performative gender presentation art form. Anyone of any gender can do any form of drag. Doing drag does not necessarily have anything to do with one’s sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
FEMME An identity &/or presentation leaning towards femininity. Can be an adjective (femme boy), verb (she femmed up), or noun (a femme). Used to describe a distinct gender identity &/or expression. Does not imply that one identifies as a woman.
GENDER-AFFIRMING SURGERY Refers to surgical alteration, and is only one part of some trans people’s transition. Many transgender people don’t choose to and/or cannot afford to have genital surgery.
GENDERQUEER Identity/expression beyond the gender binary. They may identify as neither male nor female, outside of/between binary gender boxes, or feel restricted by gender labels. Some genderqueer people don’t identify as trans or nonbinary.
GENDER QUESTIONING A person who is questioning their current gender identity and/or exploring other identities and presentations.
INTERSEX Person w/ uncommon combination of “male” & “female” hormones, chromosomes & anatomy. Parents & medical professionals assign intersex infants a sex and sometimes perform surgeries to conform the infant’s genitalia to that assignment.
LGBTQQIAPP+ Short for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, aromantic, pansexual, polysexual (sometimes abbreviated to LGBT or LGBTQ+). Sometimes this acronym is replaced with “queer.” Note that “ally” is not included in this acronym.
Mx. Used instead of Mr., Mrs., or Ms. for someone who does not identify as either a man or a woman, or as a gender-neutral way to refer to someone. Example: Mx. Smith.
PRONOUNS Word that refers to either the subject (I or you), or object (she, it, them, this…). Gender pronouns specifically refer to people that you are talking about.
QUEER General term for gender & sexual minorities who are not cisgender &/or heterosexual. There is a lot of overlap between queer and trans identities, but not all queer people are trans and not all trans people are queer.
THEY/THEIR/THEM Pronoun used to describe someone in a gender-neutral way ( w/out assigning a gender). It is also a common gender-neutral pronoun that many people use, especially non-binary, genderqueer, and other trans folks.
TRANS Prefix or adjective used as an abbreviation of transgender, derived from the Latin word meaning “across from” or “on the other side of.” Can be used interchangeably with “transgender.”
TRANSGENDER An umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. The term transgender is not indicative of gender expression, sexual orientation, hormonal makeup, physical anatomy, or how one is perceived in daily life.
TRANSITION Process of developing & assuming a gender expression to match their gender identity. It can include coming out to family, friends, &/or co-workers; name &/or gender marker change on legal documents; hormone therapy; and possibly some form of surgery.
TRANSPHOBIA Systemic violence against trans people, associated with attitudes such as fear, discomfort, distrust, or disdain. This word is used similarly to homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny, etc.
TRANS WOMAN someone assigned male at birth who identifies as a woman. They may/may not identify as trans; if not, it would be appropriate to just say “woman.”
TRANS MAN describes someone assigned female at birth who identifies as a man. They may/may not identify as trans; if not, it would be appropriate to just say “man.”.
TWO SPIRIT An umbrella term indexing various indigenous gender identities in North America.
ALL-GENDER RESTROOMS Gender-inclusive restrooms for people of all genders. Also known as “gender-neutral restrooms.”
