What is Tricare? | A health care program for Uniformed Service members, retirees, and their families. Both Tricare and CHAMPVA are always secondary to other health insurance plans excluding supplemental plans and Medicaid. |
What is Tricare Prime? | An HMO insurance program offered to active duty members, retirees, activated guard, and reserve members and families. If you are on active duty, you have to enroll in Tricare Prime, all others can choose to enroll or use Tricare Select. |
What is Tricare Select? | A fee-for-service plan that lets members see any doctor. If a member visits a network doctor they normally will only have to pay a small fee. Available to family members, veterans, and retirees. |
What is Tricare Standard? | Plan that allows member to choose any authorized provider. Most expensive of all plans, requiring varying deductible, copayments, and up to 15% in charges that exceed the allowable amount as determined by Tricare provider. Fee-for-Service plan. |
What is Tricare Extra? | A PPO plan that provides coverage for all essential yet minimum health care requirements as ordained under the Affordable Care Act. |
What is CHAMPVA? | Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veteran's Affairs- Comprehensive plan in which VA shares cost of covered services and supplies. Cannot get CHAMPVA if eligible for Tricare. Always secondary excluding supplemental and Medicaid. |
