Immunology-Chapter 7

QuestionAnswer
Immunology A branch of scientific study that focuses on understanding the immune system. Microscopes played a role in the establishment of this kind of study.
Antibodies Our immune system produces these proteins after exposure to antigens that cause infection. They protect us from additional attacks from the same antigens.
Immune System This body system is responsible for noticing foreign invaders in our bodies and destroying them to protect us.
Immune complex Antigen-Antibody complex
Antigens We use this term when referring to the foreign invaders that can enter our bodies.
Humoral Immunity We get this type of immunity from antibodies contained in the fluids in our bodies.
Cell-Mediated Immunity This immune response is led by cells that destroy cells that are infected, cancerous or transplanted. White blood cells and macrophages are part of this kind of immunity.
Macrophages Large cells that surround and consume antigens as part of the processes associated with cell-mediated immunity. Previously a monocyte. A "bottom feeder".
Mechanical barriers: sneezing, skin and pH First line of defense
Phagocytes, macrophages, inflammation and fever Second line of defense
T cells, B cells, antibodies Third line of defense
IgE Immunoglobulin involved in acute allergic reactions
IgM Immunoglobulin involved in primary response- 1st encounter
IgA Immunoglobulin that protects mucous membranes from bacterial and viral infections
IgG Immunoglobulin that responds to antigens in the 2nd encounter
IgD Immunoglobulin involved in lymphocyte activation and suppression
Active immunity Long term protection against future infections that were formed during an infection or in response to receiving attenuated organism in vaccination
Passive Immunity Short term protection against infection
In vivo Tests performed within a living host. (TB skin test)
In vitro Tests performed outside of the body (Mono test)
Chromatographic assay Antigen antibody reaction takes place and causes a color change
Epstein Barr virus Causative agent of infectious mononucleosis
Immunoassay that is based on the detection of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin HCG- pregnancy test
B cells Lymphocyte that differentiates into plasma cells and memory cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
