Plate tectonics

TermDefinition
Asthenosphere The upper layer of the earth's mantle. Is solid but acts like liquid
Subduction when one plate sinks down under another
Seafloor spreading when magma pushes up it creates a ridge and the rocks push up together and it makes the floor spread
Mantle convection where matter is moved in circular patterns within the mantle
Ridge push lava hardens and pushes the plates away
Slab pull when older , colder plates sink at the subduction zone
Lava hot molten that came from a volcano
Magma hot fluid below the earth's surface
Tectonic plate a massive , irregularly shaped slab of solid rock
Theory of continental drift a theory describing earth's plates
Convergent boundary a area where two convergent plates meet
Divergent boundary a area where two divergent plates meet
Transform boundary a area where two transform plates meet
Hot spot a place of danger
Epicenter (in regards to earthquakes) a point right above the focus
Focus (in regards to earthquakes) a point in the center of the crust where the rupture begins
Pangaea a super continent that existed a long time ago
Geohazard a geological state that may lead to world ride damage
Reverse fault one side of the fault moves up and over the other side
Strike-slip fault a fault in which rock strata are displaced parallel to the line of the fault.
Normal fault a break in a body of rock, marked by the displacement and discontinuity of strata on either side of a surface.
Compression pushing something down
Tension apply a force to something
Shearing to break off a structural strain
Felsic relating to or denoting a group of light-colored minerals including feldspar, feldspathoids, quartz, and muscovite.
Mafic containing a group of dark-colored minerals
