Algebra Terms #1
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Definition (variable) | A symbol used to represent an unknown quantity (number), represented by a letter, such as a, x or y. |
Definition (operator) | A symbol (+, −, ×, ⋅, or ÷) representing a mathematical operation. |
Definition (term) | A number, variable, product, or quotient in an expression of sums and/or differences. Therefore, if we remove all the operation signs or the equal symbol in the mathematical sentence, this is what's left. |
Definition (expression) | A representation of a quantity that contains numbers, variables, and/or operation symbols. This does NOT have an equal sign and cannot be solved. |
Definition (coefficient) | A numerical factor in a term, and is the number in front of the variable that is used to multiply the variable by. When the variable does not have a number in front of it, this represents 1. |
Example (variable) | 5x + 9 = 24 (x) |
Example (operator) | 5x + 9 = 24 (+) |
Example (coefficient) | 5x + 9 = 24 (5) |
Example (expression) | 5x + 9 = 24 (5x + 9 and 24) |
Example (terms) | 5x + 9 = 24 (5x, 9, and 24) |
