Plate Techtonics

TermDefinition
Asthenosphere Upper mantle and crust.
Subduction When a tectonic plate slips under another.
Mantle convection The process in the mantle of less dense material rises, getting pushed to the size because of the lack of space, cooling down and sinking, and being heated back up and starting the cycle again.
Seafloor spreading The process by New ocean floor being creating by the denser material sinking into the mantle, this also creates new seafloor and moves the tectonic plates.
Ridge push When the end of tectonic plates push against each other.
Slab pull When the tectonic plates on Earth pull away from each other.
Lava Molten rock once it leaves beneath Earth's surface.
Magma Molten rock beneath Earth's surface.
Tectonic plates Broken up pieces of Earth' surface, reason why land moves on Earth.
Theory of Contenintial drift The theory that all land was connect in a super continent called Pangaea but moved apart over time.
Convergent boundary When 2 plates slide towards each other.
Divergent boundary When 2 plates move away from each other.
Transform boundary When 2 plates slide away from each other.
hotspot Lava from the mantle on the surface, is not a volcano.
Epicenter The eye of a hurricane, strongest winds.
Focus The point in a hurricane that the winds surround.
Pangaea All of the Land on Earth when I was connected.
Geohazard Hazard to the environment.
Reverse fault These form from horizontal and vertical compression.
Strike slip fault When compression is done horizontally.
Normal fault Cracks or tears in Earth's surface when pressure is applied too often.
Compression to push particles together with lots of pressure.
Tension Energy that builds up over time.
Shearing Pressure applied to an object.
Felsic Light colored rocks with high silica contents.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
