Fossils & Rocks

How fossils are dated, created and destroyed. Review of the fossil record.

QuestionAnswer
Absolute dating can be used to determine which object is older or how much older objects are from each other, and how old is an object.
Relative dating can be used to determine things such as a sequence of events or what order events occurred.
Law of Superposition the oldest layer is on the bottom and the youngest layer is at the top of the rock layers.
Relative dating only gives an estimated age
Absolute dating gives an exact age
Fossils provide evidence of how life and the environment has changed over time,
How can scientist determine that dinosaurs went extinct roughly 65 million years ago possible in Michigan? by analyzing fossils and the rock strata that dinosaur bones were contained in around the world or in other states.
Sedimentary fossil process when an organism dies it gets covered in sediment. This preserves the remains. More layers of sediment are added over time which compacts and cements the sediments together in the rock layer.
Geological processes that can impact the fossil process glaciers, hot/dry climate, movement of the tectonic plates.
Zircons only form in volcanic rocks. Are used in absolute dating of rocks.
Strata The layers in a sedimentary rock, due to different sediments being deposited at different times.
Erosional habitats Habitats whose sediments are carried away, fossils cannot form in these habitats.
Direct evidence evidence that pertains to a specific time and place. Ex. 10,000 years ago MI was covered in glaciers.
Indirect evidence evidence that is pulled from other areas and times to imply what may have happened. Ex. 66 mya an astroid hit Earth. This caused the mass extinction of many animals and may have caused extinction of animals in MI
Gaps in the fossil record may occur if there a periods of time when there was a lack of deposition or the layers of sedimentary rock were removed by erosion.
Scientist can gain insight into the gaps in the fossil record of an area by using indirect evidence: looking at other areas around the world or look at regions close by to see what types of fossils they contain.
Fossils can tell us what the climate was like, how the climate has changed over time
