Week 4 keyboarding terms

TermDefinition
system software computer software which provides instructions for basic operation of computer hardware (runs the computer and all the other software)
application software computer software which provides platforms and instructions for specific tasks, like creating a documents, editing photos, or playing a game
open-source software computer software which can be used without paying a license fee and can be modified to add capabilities not realized by its originators
proprietary software computer software which has restrictions on its use and source code is kept secret
hard drive internal component for memory and storage
central processing unit (cpu) considered the brains of the computer; it receives messages from software and hardware and tell the computer what to do
touchpad computer pointing device in which a user slides their finger across a surface to move the cursor, or presses an area of the surface to click on something
random access memory (RAM) computer memory which temporarily stores computer information such as the operating system, application programs and data so they can be immediately accessed by the CPU
read-only memory (ROM) computer memory which stores the BIOS; data stored in ROM cannot be changed
basic input/output system (BIOS) built-in program which initializes computer hardware and launches the operating system when the computer starts
