Map Vocab

compass rose measures cardinal directions (N, E, S, W)
scale compares distance on a map to distance in real life
large-scale shows a lot of detail of a small area
small-scale shows a little detail of a large area
hemisphere half of the Earth (northern/southern or eastern/western)
equator the imaginary line that divides the Earth into northern and southern hemispheres
prime meridian the imaginary line that divides the Earth into eastern and western hemispheres
latitude positioning lines that run east to west (ex: equator)
longitude positioning lines that run north to south (ex: prime meridian)
political map a map that shows borders, capitals, and important cities
physical map a map that shows land elevation and water depth
thematic map a map that displays data or statistics (ex: population, climate, natural resources, etc.)
legend/key shows you what the symbols on the map mean
