Ocean Composition
Term | Definition |

Continental Slope | The steeply inclined section of the ocean floor located between the continental shelf and the shoreline |
Aquifer | A body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater |
Salinity | A measure of the amount of dissolved solids in a given amount of liquid |
Condensation | The change of state from a gas to a liquid in the water cycle |
Continental shelf | A gently sloping section of the ocean floor located between the shoreline and the continental slope |
Infiltration | The process by which water on the surface enters the soil |
Dew | The sharing of water amping different locations |
Chemical Property | A characteristic of a substance that describes the chemical composition |
Transpiration | The process by which water is carried through plants and release into the air as water vapor |
Trench | A long narrow gap into the ocean floor along two plate boundaries |
Physical Property | A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical composition |
Continental Margin | Made up of continental shelf, continental slope, continental rise leading into the ocean basin floor |
Accumulation | The collection of water in a specific location |
Abyssal Plain | A large, flat, almost level area of the deep ocean basin |
Atmospheric conditions | The temperature, wind, clouds and precipitation of a given location |
Rift Valley | A lowland region formed where Earth’s tectonic plates are moving apart |
Evaporation | The process of turning from a liquid to a gas or water vapor |
Surface water | Water that is located ground in lakes, rivers, or oceans |
Seamount | A mountain underwater |
Volcanic Island | Small island above sea level that is formed by an underwater volcano |
