Admixture Chemical or Mineral added to mortar to change is set time
Adobe Sun dried, molded clay brick
Aggregate Material such as crushed stone or gravel used as a filler in concrete
ASTM American Society for Testing and Materials
Ashlar Square, Rectangle or cut flat faced surface with a sawed joint
Capital Top part of an architectural column
CMU Concrete masonry unit
Cored Brick with holes cored in them to reduce weight
Comice The horizontal projection crowning the wall of a building
Course A row of CMU's
Cube A strapped bundle of block or brick
Facing The part or face of the block or brick that shows after construction
Grout A thin mixture portland cement, lime and water
Joints The area between each block or brick that is filled with mortar
Stone Vaneer CMU's with other added materials to give an appearance of natural stone
Mason A person who assembles CMU's
Mortar A mixture of Portland cement, lime, fine aggregate and water
Parapet A low wall or railing
Structural Bearing weight in addition to its own
Uncored Solid brick
Weephole A small opening in a mortar joint to allow the escape of moisture
Wythe A continuous section of masonry that is all the same size
Closure Unit Last brick final course
Crowd the line To touch or lay block or brick too close to the masons line
Racking Shortening each course of CMU's by half a unit to stagger the joints
Return A corner in a structure or lead
Slack to the line a CMU getting too far away from the line
