Conduction

TermDefinition
Conduction The process of heat transfer MOSTLY in a solid (but can happen in liquid) through direct contact.
How does heat flow between objects that are in direct contact? Does it flow from hot to cold or cold to hot? hot to cold
Which way does heat flow? A spoon with fast moving molecules holding a scoop of ice cream with slow moving molecules. (spoon to ice cream OR ice cream to spoon) spoon to ice cream
Heat flow from hot to cold until it is the ________(same or different) temperature in both objects that are in direct contact. same
Heat energy flows from ________________________ materials warmer to cooler
Temperature must be _____________(different or same) in order for heat to flow in the objects that are in direct contact. different
Which way does heat flow? A spoon with slow moving molecules inside of a cup of soup with fast moving molecules. (soup to spoon OR spoon or soup) soup to spoon
Which way does heat flow? A hand with fast moving molecules holding and a metal fork with slow moving molecules. (hand to fork OR fork to hand) hand to fork
Heat will NOT flow if the objects were of the _____________(same or different) temperature. same
Heat will ONLY flow if the objects were of the __________(same or different) temperature. different
Which way does heat flow? A hand with fast moving molecules holding and a phone with slow moving molecules. (hand to phone OR phone to hand) hand to phone
Why does conduction not work at all in gas? The molecules are NOT compacted together enough to transfer the energy to another object.
Why does conduction work very well in solid? The molecules are compacted together enough to transfer the energy to another object.
Which way does heat flow? A sock with FAST moving molecules covering a foot with FASTER moving molecules.( sock to foot OR foot to sock) foot to sock
Heat flows FASTER when the objects in direct contact are of ____________(same or different) temperatures. different

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
