chapter 1,2,3
Vocabulary | Definition |
---|---|
Asexual reproduction | A reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that is genetically identical to the parent |
Sexual reproduction | A productive process in which two parents combine their genetic material to produce a new organism which differs from the parents |
Fertilization | A process in which an egg cell and a sperm cell join together to form a new cell |
Trait | A specific characteristic that an organism can pass to its offspring through its genes |
Gene | A sequence of DNA that determines a trait and is passed from parent to offspring |
Inheritance | Is the process by which an offspring receives genes from its parents |
Allele | A different form of the same gene |
Dominant | A trait that will always show up in the offspring |
Heredity | The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another. |
Dominant Allele | A variation of a gene that will produce a certain phenotype, even in the presence of other alleles |
Recessive Allele | A variety of genetic code that does not create a phenotype when a dominant allele is present |
Probability | The chance of something happening |
Genotype | The genetic constitution of an individual organism |
Phenotype | The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment |
Quantify | Express or measure the quantity of |
Factor | A circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome |
Chromosome | A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes |
Cell cycle | Stages that cells pass through to allow them to divide and produce new cells |
Pedigree | A tool for genetic or genealogical research |
Meiosis | A type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell |
Chromatids | Each of the two threadlike strands into which a chromosome divides during cell division |
Mitosis | A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent |
Structure | The arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements |
Function | An activity or purpose |
