The Hero's Journey

Flashcards to help you learn the stages of the Hero's Journey

TermDefinition
STATUS QUO [AT THE BEGINNING] The ordinary place where the hero lives; it is a place of comfort and normalcy
CALL TO ADVENTURE Something/someone encourages the hero to begin the adventure. The hero is moved forward by a person, problem, riddle, etc...
ASSISTANCE A helper/guide/mentor gives the hero some type of assistance [help] – it can be in the form of guidance, advice, support or even a weapon.
DEPARTURE The hero leaves the ordinary world and begins the adventure. They move into the special world. This special world is unknown to the hero. The hero doesn’t know the limits or expectations of this special world.
TRIALS These are the challenges, tests, tasks that the hero faces. The hero might not pass all the tests but faces them anyways.
APPROACH The hero faces his/her worst fear. The hero steps forward into the danger.
CRISIS The darkest, most critical moment of the journey. The Hero may directly experience death or witness the death of an ally or mentor or, even worse, directly cause that death.
TREASURE A treasure is a reward that the hero gets after overcoming his/her fear. The Reward comes in many forms: a magical sword, a potion, greater knowledge or insight, or even a repaired relationship with someone.
RESULT Villains die [or can even chase the hero].
RETURN The hero must now complete his journey and make his way back to the Ordinary World.
NEW LIFE The hero sheds his old life and becomes something else – more confident, knowledgeable, wise, skillful, etc. As a result of his journey, he’s created a better version of himself and a better life.
RESOLUTION Everything seems to be back to normal – all the loose ends are tied up.
STATUS QUO [AT THE END] Life returns to normal for our Hero. But it’s an even better sense of normal than the one he started with.
