TermDefinition
Hook a compelling idea, statement, or question designed to capture the readers’ attention in an introduction.
Claim a sentence in the introduction of an argumentative essay that tells which side of the argument that you want to prove is true.
Thesis Statement a sentence in the introduction of an expository essay that states the main points of the essay.
Topic Sentence a sentence that supports the thesis or claim; the main idea of a body paragraph.
Transitions words used at the beginning or within your paragraphs to help your paper flow logically (also, however, for example, furthermore, etc.).
Evidence facts, examples, and direct quotes from the passages that support the topic sentence of each paragraph.
Elaboration explaining or telling more about the evidence.
Paraphrase to state what the passage says in your own words instead of copying it directly from the text.
Citation A direct quotation from the text that names which passage you’re quoting from and uses quotation marks to show which sentences come directly from the text.
Summarize Retell the main ideas of your essay. You should summarize the main points in your conclusion.
