Sedimentary Rocks
5.7A-Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Oil (Petroleum) and Natural Gas | Heat, pressure, and time formed ‐‐‐‐‐ from ocean animals and plants that died and were buried DEEP in the Earth. |
Weathering | The breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces called sediments. |
Sedimentary Rock | Type of rock made of layers of compressed sediments. |
Sediments | Small pieces of organic (living) and inorganic (non‐ living) material that have been broken down by weathering of rock. |
Compaction | When sediments are buried deep under layers, the pressure smashes them together in a process called ‐‐‐‐‐. |
Coal | Heat, pressure, and time formed ‐‐‐‐‐ from plants that died and decayed in swamps millions of years ago under layers of sediments. |
Fossil Fuels | Energy source that was formed millions of years ago from the remains of living organisms. (CON-Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas) |
Cementation | Minerals stick sediments together like glue or cement. |
Deposition | When sediments are deposited (dropped off). |
Erosion | Process that moves sediments from one place to another. (Takes it) |
Friction | Force that slows or stops motion when objects rub together. |
Force | A push or pull that causes an object to move, stop, or change direction. |
Gravity | The force that pulls objects toward the center of the Earth. |
Cobalt | Magnetic metals include: Steel, Iron, Nickel, and ____________. |
Spring Scale | A tool for measuring Earth’s gravitational pull on an object. |
