Cell Review
Vocabulary terms for the Lynx Team
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| nucleus | The "brain" of the cell; controls all cellular activities |
| endoplasmic reticulum | Transports materials (especially proteins) to both the Golgi bodies and around the cell |
| golgi body | Receives materials from the endoplasmic reticulum and modifies/packages them for export from the cell |
| ribosomes | Organelles that make proteins |
| cell wall | The non-living organelle that gives shape to and protects the plant cell. |
| cell membrane | A flexible covering that allows materials to enter or exit the cell; found in all cells. |
| cytoplasm | Gel-like material that contains the organelles. |
| photosynthesis | Process in which water and carbon dioxide are changed into glucose and oxygen; occurs in the chloroplasts |
| mitochondria | "Powerhouses" of the cell; produce energy. |
| vacuoles | Storage containers in the cell. Vacuoles store water, food and waste. |
| lysosomes | Organelles that contain enzymes |
| enzymes | Molecules, found in lysosomes, that help to digest food and break down damaged/worn out materials in the cell. |
| sugar (glucose) | Sugar that is broken down to produce energy for the cell. |
| chloroplasts | Site of photosynthesis in the plant cell. Sugar is made in the chloroplasts. |
| proteins | Molecules made by ribosomes. |
| organelles | Any of the small structures found inside cells |
| cell | The basic unit of structure in living organisms |
| chromatin | All the DNA in the nucleus of a cell |
| prokaryotic | A simple cell that lacks a nucleus |
| eukaryotic | A more complex cell that has a nucleus |
| animal or plant | Examples of eukaryotic cells |
| bacteria | Example of a prokaryotic cell |
| oxygen | "Waste" product of photosynthesis |
