Vocabulary list for Pilgrams

TermMeaning
Pilgrim people who are always traveling to find something they love, or to find a land where they can be happier.
Mayflower the ship in which the Pilgrims sailed from Southampton to the New World in 1620.
turkey a large bird; very popular dish at Thanksgiving meals.
Thanksgiving a day set aside in the United States for giving thanks.
harvest the season when ripened crops are gathered.
Plymouth the place where the Mayflower landed in 1620.
yoke a frame fitting the neck and shouders of a person, for carrying a pair of buckets or the like, one at each end.
doublet a close-fitting outer garment, with or without sleeves and sometimes having a short skirt, worn by Pilgrim men and boys.
breeches knee-length trousers, often having ornamental buckles or elaborate decoration at or near the bottoms, commonly worn by men
petticoat an underskirt, especially one that is full and often trimmed and ruffled and of a decorative fabric, worn by Pilgrim wormen and girls.
apron a garment covering part of the front of the body and tied at the waist, for protecting the wearer's clothing.
kindling material that can be readily ignited, used in starting a fire.
plantation a large farm on which cotton, tobacco, coffee, sugar cane, or the like is grown.
holiday a day of celebration with festivities.
dressing stuffing to go with a cooked turkey.
conflict a disagreement.
Mayflower Compact an agreement to establish a government, entered into by the Pilgrims in the cabin of the Mayflower on November 11, 1620.
John Smith was the captain of the Mayflower and leader of the Pilgrims who came to America.
settlers a person who settles in a new country or area
Jamestown first English settlement in North America in 1607.
