Word Lesson 1: understanding words
Term | Definition |

Backstage view | Contains commands for managing document |
Block style | Format that aligns text along the left margin including the date, inside address, salutation, body of letter, closing, and signature |
Command | Enables users to save their work to the cloud and access the document quickly from any computer or tablet |
Dialog box | Displays additional options or information you can use to execute a command |
Dialog box launcher | A small arrow in the lower-right corner of the group |
Groups | Collections of related Word commands |
I-beam | When the insertion point changes to a large āIā when you place your cursor near it |
Insertion point | Where you begin creating your text |
Menu | Drop down or list of options |
Mixed punctuation | Requires a colon after the salutation and a comma after the closing |
Nonprinting characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands that can help users create and edit documents |
Open punctuation | Requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing |
Preview | Gives you an opportunity to see what your printed document will look like, so you can correct errors before printing |
To send a document to a printer | |
Quick access toolbar | Located above the ribbon and contains commands that users access most often |
Repeat | Command that repeats your last action |
Ribbon | Contains multiple commands on separate tabs |
Save | Enables the Save As screen to save your work |
Save as | Enables users to save their work to the cloud and access the document quickly from any computer or tablet |
Settings | Control document-specific print parameters |
Tabs | Contains several groups, or collections of related Word commands |
Template | A master document with predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles that is used to create new documents with the same basic formatting |
Undo | Lets you cancel or undo your last Word command or option |
White space | The space between pages of the document |
Word wrap | Automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the next margin |
