Unit 3 LTF vocab 2

Second set of Unit 3 vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
lateral axis An axis running from the pilot's left to right in piloted aircraft, and parallel to the wings of a winged aircraft.
lift A force generated that is stronger than the weight force.
longitudinal axis An axis drawn through the body of the vehicle from tail to nose in the normal direction of flight, or the direction the pilot faces.
momentum The product of the mass and velocity of an object.
nautical mile A unit of measurement defined as 1852 meters (approximately 6,080 feet or 1.2 statute miles).
Newton’s Laws of Motion Three physical laws that describe the relationship between a body and the forces acting upon it, and its motion in response to those forces.
propulsion A means of creating force leading to movement.
pressure The force applied perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit area over which that force is distributed.
rudder A primary control surface used to control yaw around the vertical axis.
see-and-avoid The technique employed by an aircraft pilot to maintain acceptably safe separation from other aircraft without following instructions or guidance from air traffic control.
statute mile A unit of distance on land in English-speaking countries equal to 5280 feet, or 1760 yards (1.609 kilometers).
thrust The force which moves an aircraft through the air.
unaccelerated flight A condition when an airplane is in steady, level flight, and the condition of equilibrium prevails.
velocity The rate of change of an object's position with respect to a frame of reference, and is a function of time.
vertical axis Also called yaw axis, is defined to be perpendicular to the wings and to the normal line of flight with its origin at the center of gravity and directed towards the bottom of the aircraft.
VLOS (visual-line-of-sight) The unaided visual contact between a pilot-incommand or a visual observer and the sUAV.
weight The force generated by the gravitational attraction of the earth on an aircraft.
