substance single kind of matter that has distinct physical and chemical properties
compound substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio or proportion
element substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance by physical or chemical means
mixture made of two or more substances (can be elements, compounds, or both) that are in the same place but are NOT chemically combined
atom smallest unit of an element that keeps the properties of that element
nucleus the tiny, central core of an atom, contains protons and neutrons
proton small, positively (+) charged particle in the nucleus of an atom
neutron small, uncharged particle in the nucleus
electron tiny, negatively charged (-), high-energy particle that moves in the space around the nucleus
chemical bond the force that holds two atoms together
molecule two or more atoms that are bonded together
chemical formula a shorthand way to represent a compound. Elements are indicated using symbols from the periodic table and the number is indicated with subscripts
chemical equation a shorter, easier way to show chemical reactions, using symbols instead of words
subscripts numbers in the formula that are written smaller and lower than the letters. They show the ratio of the atoms in a molecule
reactants the materials at the beginning of a reaction. Written first in a chemical equation (what you start with)
products the materials that are at the end of the reaction. Written after the arrow in a chemical equation. (what you end up with)
conservation of mass matter cannot be created or destroyed
