Question | Answer |
---|---|
Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) | Rules prescribed by the FAA governing all aviation activities in the United States. |
Bernoulli’s principle | An increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluid's potential energy. |
elevator | Flight control surface, usually at the rear of an aircraft that controls the aircraft's pitch. |
gravity | A natural phenomenon by which all things with energy are brought toward one another. |
aileron | A hinged flight control surface usually forming part of the trailing edge of each wing of a fixed-wing aircraft. |
AGL (Above Ground Level) | The height above ground level as measured with respect to the underlying ground surface. |
center of gravity (CG) | The point over which the aircraft would balance. |
drag | The aerodynamic force that opposes an aircraft's motion through the air (thrust). |
force | Any interaction that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object. |
intrinsic | An adjective that describes something that is basic or essential to a thing. |
downwash | The change in direction of air deflected by the aerodynamic action of an airfoil as part of the process of producing lift. |
airfoil | The shape of a wing or blade of a propeller as seen in cross-section. |
aerodynamics | The study of objects in motion through the air and the forces that produce or change such motion. |
Inertia | The resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion. |
air traffic control (ATC) | A service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace. |
hydraulics | Machinery and tools that use liquid fluid power to do simple work. |
friction | The force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other. |
