Mass The amount of matter that something is made of
Matter Anything that has mass and volume
Energy The ability to do work (Work = force x distance)
Atom The smallest part of an element that has all the properties of that element
Molecules Neutral group of atoms held together by covalent bonds
1st Law of Thermodynamics (Conservation of Energy) Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. It can be transformed from one form to another
2nd Law of Thermodynamics In any transformation of energy form one form to another, there is always a decrease in the amount of useful energy given off as heat
Melting The change in state from a solid to a liquid
Freezing The change in state from a liquid to a solid
Evaporating The change in state from a gas to a liquid
Sublimation Conversion of a solid directly to a gas without passing through the liquid state
Deposition Conversion of a gas directly to a solid without passing through the liquid state
Latent Heat The energy absorbed or released during a change in state
Change of State (Phase Change) Conversion of a substance from one physical form to another
