Chapter 5 Science

My Vocabulary for 8th grade science class

TermDefinition
Axis An imaginary line that passes through a planets center and it's north and south poles, about which the planet rotates.
Calendar A system of organizing time that defines the begining length, and divisions of a year.
Eclipse The partial or total blocking of one object in space by another.
Equinox Either of the two days of year on which neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun.
Neap Tide The tide with the least difference between consecutive low and high tides.
Orbit The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space.
Penumbra This part of a shadow surrounding the darkest part.
Phase One of the different apparent shapes of the moon as seen from earth.
Revolution The movement of an object around another object.
Rotation The spinning motion of a planet on it's axis.
Solar Eclipse The blocking of sunlight to earth that occurs when the moon is directly between the sun and earth.
Solstice Either of the two days of the year on which the sun reaches it's greatest distance north or south equator.
Spring Tide The tide with the greatest difference between consecutive low and high tides.
Tide The periodic rise and fall of the level of water in ocean.
Umbra The darkest part of a shadow.
