Bureaucracy An organization with hierarchical structure and specific responsibilities, which operate on management principles intended to enhance efficiency and effectiveness; in government, it refers to departments and agencies in executive branch ie. IRS
Department Large organizations responsible for a broad policy realm (education, national defense, transportation). Independent agencies have narrow responsibilities for a specific policy issue like the environment
Secretaries Any of the 15 major government agencies for specific policy and serve on president’s cabinet
Independent Agencies Federal agencies with narrow responsibilities for a specific policy issue, not covered by one of the 15 federal departments
Government Corporations Run like private corporations raise revenue through sales of products and services
Government Corporations 1. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation 2. National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) 3. Overseas Private Investment Corporation 4. Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation 5. US Postal Service
