Integers and Rational Numbers
Term | Definition |

opposites | two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line in opposite directions |
integers | the set of positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero |
whole numbers | consists of the number 0 and all of the counting numbers |
zero | neither positive nor negative |
positive numbers | numbers to the right of zero on a number line |
negative numbers | numbers to the left of zero on a number line |
rational numbers | numbers that can be written in the form a/b where a and b are integers and b can not equal 0 |
greater than | compares two numbers with the greater number given first |
less than | compares two numbers with the lesser number given first |
inequality | says two values are not equal |
absolute value | a numbers distance from 0 on a number line |
coordinate plane | a surface formed by the intersection of two number lines |
quadrant | four regions of the coordinate plane divided by the axes |
ordered pair | a pair of numbers that describe the location of a point in the coordinate plane |
x-coordinate | tells the position along the x-axis |
y-coordinate | tells the position along the y-axis |
