Mass Quiz

For a Middle school Project

QuestionAnswer
What is Mass? The property of a body that causes it to have weight in a gravitational field
How much less does a object of mass weigh in water then in land? Trick question! Even though a body of mass seems lighter in water, it's the same!
If one quarter weighs about 6 grams, how much would 5 dollars in quarters weigh? About 120 grams. 6*4=24 24*5=120
If you dropped a pencil and an encyclopedia at the same height at the same time, which would hit the floor first? Neither, because of the laws of gravity. Even though their mass are different sizes, gravity effects them with the same force, thus, they get pulled to the earth at the same speed. (F=\frac{GM_em}{r^2})
If you drop a piece of unfolded paper, and a pencil, which will hit the ground first? The pencil, because the paper would catch the air, which will make it partially resist gravity, making it float, while the pencil will just drop right away.
If a body of mass such as a human lived in a valley, then moved to the top of a mountain, what would change about its mass? Nothing, because location has no effect on mass.
If a log burns, would the ashes have the same mass? Explain. No, because since the log releases carbon dioxide it cuts some of its mass, making the ash have less mass than the log.
What is the definition of Gravity? The force of attraction by which terrestrial bodies tend to fall toward the center of the earth.
If you were to pop a balloon, would its mass change? No, because even if it popped, it would weigh the same, giving it the same mass.
