Benzene Organic compound found in petroleum.
Biofilter Filter that contains microorganisms that digest pollutants and convert biomass materials into energy sources.
Biology Study of living organisms.
Bioremeditation Use of microscopic organisms to clean contaminated substances.
Chemestry Scientific study of materials, their properties, their interactions, and the changes that they undergo.
Compounds Two or more atoms chemically bounded together.
Effluent Out-flowing water.
Fungi Single or multi-cell microscopic organisms that have a nucleus.
Geology Scientific study of the earth,its evolution, and its physical properties.
Hydrocarbons Organic compounds made of carbon and hydrogen, such as methane and propane.
Hydrology Study of the hydrologic cycle.
Influent In-flowing liquid, like sewage flowing into a sewer treatment plant.
Litmus test strips Product used to measure the pH of liquids.
Microbes Microscopic organisms like bacteria and fungus.
Percolation test Used to determine the suitability of soil for on-site drain field.
Photoiozing detectors Measure levels of volatile organic compounds in the air.
pH Measure of ho acidic or basic a substance is.
Point source solution Pollution coming from a single identifiable source.
Porosity Measure of open space in materials such as rock.
Septic system On-site sewage treatment system that includes settling tanks and drain fields.
Sewer treatment plants Centralized facilities that treat wastewater that comes from houses and businesses in the area.
