imagery | the way a writer creates an image or sensation for the reader with vivid details |
simile | poetic comparison between two objects using the words "like" or "as" |
aphorism (or gnomic expression) | an expression that condenses a wise saying into a few words |
atmosphere | a sensation or emotion that an author creates in the reader such as suspense or excitement |
leit-motif | a recurring phrase, object, or image in a book that is used to thread the story together to unify the whole |
enigma | mysteries or puzzles |
allegory | an element of a story or poem that has a second meaning hidden behind the obvious one |
conflict | the struggle or tension between opposing forces |
types of conflict | 1.)man against nature, 2.)man against man, 3.)man against himself, 4.)man against God or fate. |
mathom | A birthday present, esp. one whose use has been forgotten |
