Continent Large bodies of land: NA, SA, Africa, Australia, Europe, Antarctica, Asia
Hemisphere "Half a sphere": 4 hemisphere, northern, southern, eastern, western
Equator Imaginary line dividing the world into northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere.Zero degrees north and south
Longitude Running north and south, but measure east and west
Meridian Longitude lines
Prime meridian Imaginary line dividing the world into eastern and western hemisphere. Zero degrees east and west
Latitude Running east to west, but measure north to south "ladder"
Parallels Latitude lines
Cardinal directions N,S,E,W
Intermediate directions NE,SE,NW,SW
Compass rose a drawing on a map that shows direction
Scale Tells you how much smaller the distance on a map is compared with the actual distance
Symbol Anything that stands for something else on a map
Map key Tells you what the symbols stand for
Locators Show where subject area of the main map is located
Political map Shows information such as countries, states, cities, and other important political features
Physical map Shows Earth's natural features
Elevation map Type of physical map that shows height of land above sea level
Relief map Type of physical map that shows changes in elevation
Historical map Shows information about the past or where past events took place
Distribution map Shows how things such as language, religion, population and rainfall are distributed throughout the area
