Modern Slavery

QuestionAnswer
Child labor Many are forced to work because they are poor and cannot survive without the extra income. Employers prefer to hire workers who are below the minimum legal age because they are less likely to protest against low wages and poor working conditions.
Bonded labor This form of slavery is when a person is forced to work as a means of repayment for a loan. The labourer will often receive basic food and shelter as ‘payment’ for their work, but may never pay off the loan, which can be passed down for generations.
Forced labor People who are illegally recruited by individuals, governments or political parties and made to work against their will. Victims of this kind of slavery are threatened with violence and other punishments and usually receive no pay for their work.
Forced marriage This type of slavery affects girls and women who are told who they are to marry and are not given any choice on the matter. Many of these girls and women are treated as slaves by their husbands and are often victims of physical violence.
Descent-based slavery People are born into a ‘group’ that society views as suited to being used as slaves. This could be based on class, race or ethnicity. They face ongoing discrimination in their life and aren’t free to choose what kind of work or who they work for.
Human Trafficking Modern Day Slavery - involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor
Fair Trade This agreement guarantees decent and fair working conditions and ensures that producers receive a fair price for their goods. Investment is also made into development projects that fight poverty.
Ethical Trade Does not go as far as fair trade. Does ensure that core labor standards are met, including no forced labor and no child labor.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) Drafted by representatives from all regions of the world, this was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as a common standard for all peoples. Fundamental human rights should be protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.
