geode | rounded, hollow rock that is often lined with mineral crystals |
crystallization | the process by which atoms are arranged to form a material that has a crystal structure. |
solution | a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another |
vein | a narrow channel or slab of a mineral that is different from the surrounding rock |
rock forming mineral | minerals that make up most of the earths crust - about 20 |
granite | generally light colored rock that has high silica content - continental crust |
basalt | dark colored rock that has low silica content - oceanic crust |
grains | particles of minerals or rocks |
texture | the look and feel of a rocks surface |
igneous rock | forms from the cooling of lava or magma |
sedimentary rock | forms when small particles of rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together |
metamorphic rock | forms when rock is changed by heat and pressure or by chemical reactions |
