Pedigrees

QuestionAnswer
Ancestor The organism from which another organism descends (such as a parent or a grandparent).
Descendant The offspring of an organism.
Dominant Describes a gene that is always expressed because it masks the other gene; represented by a capital letter.
Generation A step in the history of a family.
Genotype The genetic code of an organism - represented by two letters.
Heredity The passing of traits from one generation to the next by means of genes.
Hybrid An organism with one dominant and one recessive gene for the same trait.
Inheritance The receiving of traits from the previous generation.
Offspring The organisms or cells that are the result of reproduction.
Phenotype The physical appearance of an organism based on its genotype.
Pure Trait When an organism has either two dominant or two recessive genes.
Recessive Describes the gene that can be masked by a dominant gene; represented by a lower case letter. The recessive trait only appears when both genes are recessive.
Trait A distinguishing characteristic based on your genes (such as eye color or hair color).
