DefinitionExplanation
by peaceful means Not in a state of war or disagreement, not involving violence
candidate A person who applies for a job or is nominated for election
censor An official who examines books, films, news, etc. that are about to be published and suppresses any parts that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security.
chant A repeated rhythmic phrase, typically one shouted or sung in unison by a crowd
civil/human right A right which is believed to belong to every person
civil unrest A state of dissatisfaction, disturbance, and agitation, typically involving public demonstrations or disorder
coalition A temporary alliance for combined action, especially of political parties forming a government
constituency A group of voters in a specified area who elect a representative to a legislative body
electoral system A legal system for making democratic choices
e-petition A petition that is published on the Internet to be signed by online supporters
Account for sth To give a reason or explanation for (something) / to be the cause of (something)
Be severely hit (by sth) To be affected very severely by it
Carefree Happy and without any worries, problems, or responsibilities
Jobless figures Someone who does not have a job
Mask (a problem) To hide a problem
Problematic Involving or causing problems
Public sector jobs Job in an organization that is owned and operated by the government and exist to provide services for its citizens
Radioactive dust The radioactive particles that settle to the ground after a nuclear explosion
Recession A period when trade and industry are not successful and there is a lot of unemployment
Underline To show clearly that something is important or true
close the generation cap The difference in opinions or behaviour between older and younger people which often causes problems between them
combative Ready to fight, argue with, or oppose someone
confide in somebody about something To share one's secrets with someone, usually a trusted person unlikely to divulge them
courtesy Polite behaviour that shows respect for people in social situations
despise To hate someone or something and have no respect for them
die down If something dies down, it becomes much less noisy, powerful, or active
disruptive Causing difficulties that interrupt something or prevent it from continuing

drawback A feature of something that makes it less useful than it could be
elderly An elderly person is old. Many people now think that this word is offensive but it is often used in talking about policies and conditions that affect old people
extended family A family group that includes grandparents, cousins, aunts etc
faulty Not working correctly or made correctly
Feel sorry for somebody To feel sympathy for someone because they are in a difficult or unpleasant situation
Flatter To praise someone in order to get something that you want, especially in a way that is not sincere
Flirt with somebody Being overly friendly with somebody
Get abducted To take someone away from your home, family etc using force
Have a lot in common with somebody To be alike
Healthcare The services that look after people’s health
Hold somebody/something up Throw/hurl insults at someone
Immediate family Closest relatives (mother, father, brother, sister)
Inability The fact of not being able to do something
Inadvertently Unintentionally, thoughtlessly
Infancy The state or period of babyhood or early childhood
Insult A roup of verbs used to verbally abuse other person
