identity of addition | any term plus 0 = itself b + 0 = b -4 + 0 = -4 |
identity of multiplication | any term times 1 equals itselfy * 1 = y -10 * 1 = -10 |
distributive property | multiply the term DIRECTLY outside the parenthesis by every term in the parenthesis 3(a + b - 2) = 3a + 3b - 6 |
associative property | in multiplying or adding 3 terms, the groups do not matter 3 + 9 + 1 = (3 + 9) + 1 = 13 or3 + (9 + 1) =13 |
