Delegating, Managing, And Prioritizing Care

Delegating | Process of transferring a selected nursing task in a situation to an individual who is competent to perform that specific task |
What tasks are assigned to nursing assistants? | They do non-invasive task such as: skin care, ROM, ambulation, grooming, and hygiene care |
What tasks are assigned to LVNs? | - Non-Invasive: skin care, ambulation, ROM, grooming, and hygiene -Invasive: applying dressing, suctioning, urinary catheters, administation of oral medication, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intramuscular injections |
What tasks are assigned to RNs? | Non-invasive and invasive LVN tasks as well as assessment and planning care, initiate teaching, and administrating intravenous medication |
Prioritizing | Deciding which needs or problems require immediate action and which one may be delayed until a later time, because they are not urgent |
What are high priority assigments (prioritization) | Clients needs that are life threatening or that could result in harm to the client if they are left untreated |
What are intermediate priority assignments? (prioritization) | Nonemergency, non life threatening needs |
What are low priority assignments? (prioritization) | Client needs that are not directed towards the illness or prognosis |
What are the ABCs? (prioritization) | Airway, breathing, circulation; maintaining a patent airway is number 1 priority |
How is Maslow's hierarchy of needs related to prioritization? | Identifying the levels of physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and self- actualization; basic needs are met before moving on to other needs) |

Autocratic Leadership | the leader retains all authority and is primarily concerned with task accomplishment; effective in emergency or crisis situations. Clearly defines tasks and establishes one-way communication with the work group, making decisions alone |

Laissez-faire | Permissive style which the leader gives up control and delegates all decision making to the work group |
