CNS Stimulants amphetamine Methanphetamines, Crystal Meth Used to tx short term obesity, ADD, narcoplesy. Increases alertness and decreases fatigue. drug test uses hair now.
CNS Stimulants comes from the south american coca plant cocaine can be snorted or injected. absorbed in 1 min and lasts for 30 mins phsycologically and phsiologically addicitive.
CNS Stimulants xanthines theophylline,(10-20 mcg/ml) caffeine is a bronchiodialtor, the onset is slow and it is used for prevention. caffeine is a natural xanthine. SE: N/V, anorexia, tachycardia, palpation, vent. dysrhythmia. Cont indc.- allergy, seizures, peptic ulcers, hyperthyroidism, cardiac dysrhythmias. Can't be given w/ allopurinol, cimetidine, erythromycin, flu vaccine, or oral contr. bc they increase the levels and can't be given with st. johns wort. BE carefule in geriatric pt bc they have and increased risk for toxicity. s/s- N,V, insomnia, tremors.
CNS Stimulant levadopa Sinemet Parkinsons disease= a decrease number of neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. Levodops is given with carbidopa to cross the bbb and is called Sinemet
Adrenergic Agents epinepherine,levophed, dobutamine epinepherine is a vasocontriction Stimulate SNS (fight or flight) pupils dilate, hr bp & r go up. muscle spasms. antidote for dobutamine-regitine. it is put in a circle around filtrate to try and save the skin.
CNS Depressants anesthetics laughing gas, IV diprivan-propofol produces a loss of feeling or sensation. inhaled, or injected.
CNS Depressants analgesics Demerol, Morpheine, Codeine releives pain without the loss of consciousness. opiate agonisht. potential for dependcy, controlled substance not used for extended periods of time. antidote- narcan
CNS Depressants Non narcotic analgesics: Acetaminophen,NSAiDS, Aspiren Tylenol, Motrin OTC MEDS, releives pain and reduces fever(Antipyretic)
CNS Depressants Hypnotics Dalmane, Temazepam, Halcion shorten stages 3 and 4 of sleep and REM sleep all -pam need to be locked up
CNS Depressants Alcohol Budweiser causes vasolidation, which produces warm, flushed skin and increases gastric blood flow and increases sweating. Delirum tremors start 24hr after last drink. 3-4 days to be withdrawn
Cholinergic Blocking Agents Atropine blk or inhib actions in the pns of acetylcholine. it has the same effect as adrenergics atropine- most common and dries up everything. can't be given to glaucoma pt bc it increases the IOP in the eyes.
Adrenergic Blocking Agent phentolamine Regitine, Minipress, Ergostat HTN,BPH,Raynaudsdisease,Angina, reduce myocardial stim., reduces HR, vasodilation, decreased bp, pupils constrict. Be4 giving pt check BP & HR. dont give for HR < 60 & BP < 90Antidote: Glucagon
