Writing Direction Words

Term
Paraphrase - rewording of something written or spoken by someone else to achieve greater clarity. Synonyms: Reword, rephrase, put in other words, rewrite
Summarize - give a brief statement of the main points of (something). Synonyms: Sum up, encapsulate, re cap, outline.
Expository - writing intended to explain or describe something; formally explaining in plain language. Synonym: Explanatory, Descriptive, Interpretative
Argumentative - writing intending to persuade others regarding a debatable issue. Divergent or opposite stance taken. Format: Thesis, reasoning/evidence (facts, stats, logical, anecdotal), counter claim, conclusion
Prose - ordinary language people use in speaking and writing. Not poetry.
Narrative (noun) Narrator (noun) Narrating (verb) story, story teller, to tell a story in detail
Description - writing intended to give a mental image of something experienced. Use of sensory words (sight, sound, taste, touch).
Paragraph - A group of sentences about 1 main idea. Format - (1:3:1) 1 topic sentence, 3-5 sentences of examples, details, quotations, explanations, etc. and a concluding sentence.
Plagiarism - the act of presenting the words, ideas, images, sounds, or the creative expression of others as your own. When quoting, summarizing, or paraphrasing, cite or acknowledge where or from whom you got it.
Capitalization - Use upper case letters instead of lower case letters (Aa, Bb, Cc) when? Use upper case letters: 1) First word in every sentence. 2) Proper nouns-names 3)First word in a quotation. 4)Title's Important words 5) Nationalities (Japanese people, French language)
Context Clues - text that surrounds an unfamiliar word that helps the reader figure out the word's meaning. Clue types: definition, synonym, antonym, example, general-spread over several sentences
Paragraph - a group of sentences about 1 main idea.
