Slave Code | the laws passed in the Southern states that controlled and restricted slaves |
Nat Turner | in 1831, led an unsuccessful slave revolt in Virginia; at least 55 white people were killed; slave rebels were executed |
Harriet Tubman | former slave who led hundreds of fellow slaves to freedom through the underground railroad |
Frederick Douglass | former slave; spoke out against slavery |
Underground Railroad | a system that helped enslaved African Americans follow a network of escape routes out of the South to freedom in the North and Canada |
Know-Nothing Party | a secret, anti-Catholic society formed in 1850; formed mainly by nativists who discriminated against immigrants |
Nativist | a person who favors those born in his or her country and is opposed to immigrants |
Famine | an extreme shortage of food |
King Cotton | after the invention of the cotton gin, the south's economy focus was on producing as much cotton as possible; southerner's always need new lands in the west to grow more cotton |
