Force
8th Grade forces vocabulary review
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is force? | A push or a pull |
Is force a scalar or vector measurement? | vector |
What unit of measurement describes force? | newtons |
What 2 things are measured when looking at force? | the magnitude (strength) in newtons and the direction of the force |
What is a contact force? | A force that actually touches the item that it is pushing or pulling |
What is a non-contact force? | A force that doesn't actually touch the thing it is pushing or pulling |
Name 6 contact forces. | friction, air resistance, normal force, applied force, tension force, spring force |
Name 3 non-contact forces. | magnetic force, electrical force, gravitational force |
What is friction? | A contact force that pushes back on an object that is sliding. It is a resistance force. |
What changes the amount of friction? | The rougher the surface is, the more friction there is. |
What is a resistance force? | A force that goes opposite, pushes against, an object that is trying to move. |
What is air resistance? | A contact force that is a resistance force. It is applied on objects that are moving through the air. |
What is normal force? | An equal and opposite reaction. A book that sits on the table has the table pushing back! That table pushing back is the normal force. it is a contact force. |
What is applied force? | A contact force when something or someone pushes or pulls something. |
What is tension force? | A contact force when force is pulling from opposite ends. Typically this is a rope or wire but it can also be other things. |
What is a spring force? | A spring force is a contact force that shows up when a spring is compressed (smooshed) or stretched. |
What is gravitational force? | A non-contact force. It is the force of attraction between any 2 objects. It is most noticeable between huge objects like planets (but all matter, including you, exerts gravity!) |
What is electrical force? | A non-contact force of attraction and repulsion between subatomic particles (positives and negatives, like repels, opposites attract). |
What is magnetic force? | A non-contact force that magnets exert to push (like poles) or pull (opposite poles) other magnets and some types of metal. |
Are there forces acting on something when it is sitting still? | yes |
Are there forces acting on something when it is moving? | yes |
