Chapter 2 Vocabulary

What is additive identity? The additive identity is zero. When you add a number and 0, the sum equals the original number.
What is multiplicative identity? The multiplicative identity is 1. For any number a, the product of a and 1 is a.
What is the distributive property? For any numbers a, b, and c, a(b + c) = ab + ac and a(b - c) = ab - ac.
What is a coefficient? A coefficient is a number that multiplies a variable.
What is a term? A term is a number or the product of a number and variable(s).
What is a constant? A constant is a term that has no variable.
What is to simplify a variable expression? To simplify a variable expression replace it with an equivalent expression that has as few terms as possible.
What is Deductive reasoning? Deductive reasoning is the process of reasoning logically from given facts to a conclusion.
What is an equation? An equation is a mathematical sentence with an equal sign.
What is an open sentence? An open sentence is an equation with one or more variables.
What is a solution of an equation? A solution of an equation is a value for a variable that makes an equation true.
What is an inverse operation? Inverse operations are operations that undo each other.
What is an inequality? An inequality is a mathematical sentence that contains an unequal, greater than, less than, equal to or greater than, equal to or less than signs.
What is a solution of the inequality? A solution of the inequality is any number that makes an inequality true.
