Common Personnel Selection Techniques
Term | Definition |

Work sample test | Test in which the applicant performs a selected set of actual tasks that are physically and/or psychologically similar to those performed on the job. |
General Mental Ability test | A test that measures the overall factor of intelligence as suggested by the positive correlations among specific intellectual ability dimensions. High GMA test low risk of counterproductive behavior. |
Structured Interviews | It requires that all interviewers ask the same set of questions to all applicants and are not allowed to use follow-up or probe questions, based on job analyses. |
Job knowledge test | Tests that assess the accuracy of the knowledge to master a specific job. |
Job tryout procedure | The performance on the job is observed and evaluated for a certain period of time |
Integrity tests | Selection devices designed to measure an applicant’s attitudes toward theft, dishonesty, drug use, and other counterproductive work behavior |
Unstructured Interviews | Few constraints on the questions asked and often consists of freeflowing exchanges between the interviewer and applicant. Not based on a job analysis and unlike the structured interview, follow-up and probe questions are encouraged. |
Assessment centers | Candidates are observed participating in such exercises as leaderless group discussions and business games. Various ability and personality tests are usually administered, and in-depth structured interviews are also part of most assessment centers. |
Biodata | Questionnaires with factual kinds of questions about life and work experiences, as well as items involving opinions, values, beliefs, and attitudes that reflect a historical perspective. |
Reference check | When an employer contacts a job applicant’s previous employers, schools, colleges, and other sources to learn more about his or her employment history, educational background, and qualifications for a job. |
Vocational interests’ tests | Assess preferences for certain types of work activities and environments |
Graphology | Analysis of the handwriting. |
