4.3 Sedimentary Rock

Chapter 4.3 Sedimentary Rock

QuestionAnswer

Where is sedimentary rock formed? At or near the earth's surface hear water or where water once was in the past.
Strata Single, horizontal visible layers of rock.
How is Clastic Sedimentary Rock formed? Rock or mineral fragments, called clasts, are cemented together by the minerals calcite or quartz. Pressure cements the layers.
The types of sedimentary rock Clastic, Chemical, and Organic.
How is Chemical Sedimentary Rock formed? Dissolved minerals in water crystallizes. These minerals bind together in the form of crystals and create rock such as Halite.
How is Organic Sedimentary Rock Formed? Made from materials that were once living. These fossils are cemented together by pressure and heat.
Types of Clastic Rocks Conglomerate, Sandstone, Siltstone, and Shale.
Types of Chemical Rocks Halite which is formed form sodium and chlorine ions dissolved in water and crystallize to form Halite, which we know as salt.
Type of Organic Rocks Fossiliferous limestone or coal.
Stratification Process in which sedimentary rock is arranged in layers. The strata is visible because of different kinds, size, and color of the sediment. It is a record of the earth's history.
