Spring 7th grade Semester Review

thesis controlling idea of the paper, usually found in the introduction

protagonist hero of the story

mood feeling created by the reader
adverbs modify verbs, adverbs, and adjectives
adjectives modify nouns and pronouns
gerunds verbs that act as nouns, and end in -ing . They are processes.
participles verbs that act as adjectives, and end in -ed or -ing , and answer the question
infinitives to+ verb
comma splices sentences that have a comma in the wrong place
fragments clauses or sentences mission a verb or a subject
run-on several sentences or phrases with no punctuation
ethos credibility, authority, right/wrong (laws)
pathos emotions
logos reasoning/logic/facts
apostrophe addressing someone/something that is not there or cannot respond
anaphora repetition- beginning of clauses or phrases
anadiplosis repetition of the end word of a clause at the beginning of the next clause
antithesis two contrasting ideas that are balanced with parallel structure
parallelism repeated patterns in grammatical structure
pronouns take the place of noun, and refers to the antecedent
simple sentence contains only one independent clause
compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined with a semi-colon or a comma and a conjunction
complex sentence contains only one independent clause and at least one subordinate (dependent) clause
