Term | Definition |

Work | Anything that requires effort to achieve a result |
Employment | Paid Work |
Employee | Person who works for others |
Employer | Person who pays people to work for them |
Labour Force | All the people in the country who are available for work |
Self employment | Working for yourself |
Volunteerism | Giving time and energy without payment, in order to benefit society |
The Irish employment sectors | Agriculture, Industry, Services |
Unemployment | People that are available for work, but cannot find a suitable job |
Public Sector | People employed by the government |
Public sector jobs | Teachers, Guards, Doctors, Politicians, County Council Workers |
Private Sector | Any business that aims to make a profit, such as factories, plumbers, bankers, solicitors, retailers (shops) |
Organisation structure | This shows the position of every employee in a workplace |
Industrial relations | Relationship between Employers and Employees |
Strike | This is when employees stop working as a form of protest against their employer |
Trade Union | An organisation of workers set up to protect its members rights and interests |
Shop Steward | This is a worker who is elected by trade union members to represent them in the workplace |
How to solve industrial disputes | Disputes can be resolved through the WRC and the Labour court |
WRC | Workplace Relations Commission - They resolve industrial relations disputes |
Help for the unemployed | (1.) Jobseekers benefit (Dole) (2.) Government run Schemes for work experience (Short term work) (3.) Job seeking advice and training courses |
Reasons for unemployment | (1) Downturn in the Economy (2) Businesses closing down or moving away (3) Workers replaced with technology such as computers |
Agriculture jobs | Natural resources (Primary Sector) - Farming, Fishing, Mining, Fishing |
Industry Jobs | Using agriculture resources to make goods ( Secondary Sector) Factories, Bakers, Carpenter, Builders |
Services Jobs | Provides services (Tertiary sector) Accountants, Mechanic, Physio, Hairdresser, Solicitors, Teachers, Guards |
People who are not included in the Labour Force | (1) Those in full time education (2) Retired People (3) People who cannot work due to illness |
