Chapter 4.1 Rock: Mineral Mixtures

QuestionAnswer
Rock Naturally occurring solid mixtue of one or more minerals or organic matter.
Rock Cycle The series of processes in which a rock forms, changes from one type to another, is destroyed, and forms again by geological processes.
Process that shape the Earth Weathering, Erosion, Deposition, and Heat and Pressure.
Weathering Process in which water, wind, ice and heat break down rocks creating sediment.
What determines the texture of a rock? The amount of heat (temperature),the rate at which the rock cools (cooling rate, and the amount of pressure the rock undergoes.
Erosion Process by which sedminet is removed from its source.
Deposition The process in which the eroded material is laid down.
Heat & Pressure Heat from the Earth and pressure from large layers of rock can change the shape and texture of a rock.
Uplift Movement within the Earth that causes rock inside the Earth to be moved to the Earth's surface.
How are rocks classified? By their composition and texture.
Composition The chemical (amount of minerals and/or organic material) make-up of a rock.
