Cells & Tissues

Tuesday Night

QuestionAnswer
Cell Simplest form oflife that can exist as a self-sustaining unit
Cell Membrane Seperates the cytoplasm from the surrounding external environment
Cytoplasm Gel-like intracelluar fluid within the cell membrane
Organelles "Little organs" which are necessary for metabolism
Nucleus Control center of the cell
Ribosome Synthesizes proteins for use within a cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Synthesizes proteins and lipids
Mitochondria The cell's "powerhouse/engery", because it's a site for cellular respiration
Lysosomes Able to cause self-digestion of cell when the reduction of cells in an organism if needed
Golgi Apparatus Referred to as the packing and shipping plant(warehouse) of the cell
True Process of substance exchange across the cell's membrane is considered either an active or passive process?
False Based on gradients of temperature, pressure, or concentration both active and passive processes require the expenditure of energy (ATP)
Diffusion The movement of molecules, or other particules, from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration?
Filtration The movement of particlues across the cellular membrane due to Pressure
Osmosis Movement of a pure solvent(water) from an area of Low concentration to an area of High conentration.
True Osmosis, filtration, and diffusion are similar in that they require no cellular energy?
Phagocytosis The process in which specialized cells ingest harmful microorganisms and cellular debris by "eating" them?
True Pinocytosis is identical to Phagocytosis, except that pinocytic cells ingest liquids by "drinking" them?
Endocytosis Moves large particles acorss the cell membrane into the cell
Epithelial Tissue Functions in the process of absorption, excretion, secretion and protection
Connective Tissue Represented by blood adn lymph
Muscle Tissue Contracts and causes movement
Nervous Tissue Acts as a channel for the transmission of messages
Connective Binds structures together and serves as a framerwork
Epithelial Froms the skin, the covering of the organs, and the inner lining of the hollow organs
Connective Carries nutrients to teh cell and carries waste product away
Connective Deep fascia, superficial fascia
Nervous Initiates, controls, and coordinates the body's adaptation to its surroundings
Epithelial Always has a free surface that is exposed to outside influences
Muscle Responsible for the movement of food through the digestive tract, the constriction of blood vessels, and the emptying of the bladder
Connective Bones, cartilage, ligament
Epithelial Cells classifed by shape as squamous, cuboidal, and columnar
Connective Collects into the lymphatic vessels along with metabolic waste and toxins
Epithelial Covers all the surfaces of the body
Muscle Responsible for pumping blood through the heart and into the blood vessels
Nervous Composed of neurons
Connective Circulates throughout the body
Muscle Responsible for facial expressions, speaking and other voluntary movements
Muscous Membrane Produces a thick, sticky substance that acts as a protectant and lubricant. They also line the body surfaces that open directly to the exterior
Serous Membrane Produces a more watery, lubricating substance that lines the body cavities and sometimes forms the outermost surface of the organs containted in those cavities. Consists of two layers and partial lines the walls of the body cavities.
Serous Membrane Visceral lining covers the organs found in the body cavities
Synovial Membrane Lines the joint cavities of freely moving joints, and they secrete synovial fluid
Thixotrophy The ability of fascia to change the ground substance in it's matrix from gel to a sol state and vice versa
Hyaline The most common type of cartilage, covering the ends of bones
Elastic Cartilage Found in the external ear and larynx
Areolar Tissue Binds the skin to the underlying tissues and fills the space between muscles
Osseous Tissue Impregnated with mineral salts, chiefly Calcium phosphate adn calcium carbonate
Adipose Tissue Has an abundance of fat-containing cells
Ligaments Fibrous bands that connect bone to bone
Fibrocartilage Found between the vertebra adn in the pubic symphysis
Fibrous Connective Tissue Composed of collagen adn elastin fibers which are closely arranged
Tendons Cord or bands that serve to attach muscles to bones
Hyaline Cartilage Found on the ends of bones and in movable joints

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
