Continental Drift

Vocab for Continental Drift

QuestionAnswer
Name Earth's layers Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantle and the Crust
Which is thicker: Continental and Oceanic Crust Continental Crust
What are seismic wave? A seismic wave is a force of energy that channels though the Earth's crust and vibrates the ground when it passes.
What is the difference between Oceanic crust and Continental crust? Continental crust is less dense then oceanic rust. Oceanic crust is made of water and continental crust is not.
What are the 2 kinds of mantle? Lithosphere and Asthenosphere
What are the 2 kinds of crust? Continental and Oceanic
What are the 2 layers of the core? The Inner core and the Outer core
What is the crust made out of? oxygen, silicon, aluminum, calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, magnesium
What is the mantle made out of? silicon, oxygen, iron, magnesium
What is the Core made out of? Iron and Nickel
Theory of Continental drift The movements of the earth's continents.
Pangea A hypothetical continent with all land masses.
Inner Core A primarily solid ball made of iron and nickel.
Outer Core A liquid layer outside the outer core made up of nickel and iron
Crust A hard outer layer.
Lithosphere The rigid outer part of the earth.
Asthenosphere The upper layer of the earth's mantle.
Continental Crust The relatively thick part of the earth's crust.
Oceanic Crust A relatively thin part of the earth's crust.
Divergent boundary A linear feature that exists between the two tectonic plates.
Convergent boundary A destructive plate boundary.
Transform boundary A conservative plate boundary
Mantle more than two thousand miles thick and accounts for more than three-quarters of the volume of the Earth.
theory of continental drift when a super continent called Pangaea drifted apart into 7 smaller continents
Pangaea a super continent that existed 200 million years ago
lithosphere the uppermost part of the mantle and a strong rigid layer
asthenosphere upper mantle it is 100-660 kilometers thick
continental crust 35-70 kilometers thick
oceanic crust 7 kilometers thick
divergent boudaries where tectonic plates move apart <-- -->
convergent boudaries where two plates are coming together --> <--
transform boundary where plates slide past each other in opposite directions --> <--

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
